Archie’s Story
The dog that made me the groomer I am today.
A Tale of Rescue and Redemption
Back in 2016, I was working at a rescue kennel/grooming parlour in Hertfordshire. I would occasionally foster dogs that came into the rescue – particularly the more sensitive dogs that would benefit from being in a loving home environment. At the time, I owned 8 incredibly sociable dogs who welcomed any newbies into our home with open paws.
On March 16th 2016, a particularly unloved, messy little Shih Tzu called Archie arrived at the rescue. He had been saved by a sympathetic vet only moments before being put to sleep by his previous owners for aggression.
Archie had already experienced five different homes at just two years old. The vet sought a rescue space and immediately transported him to the centre. He was incredibly shut down, avoiding everyone and everything that came near him. He was quiet and timid, and it wasn’t easy to understand how he could end up in the situation he was in.
He came home with me that night – the first day of an exceptionally long, stressful, but incredibly rewarding journey for us both.
After the first night, it became apparent that Archie had SEVERE behavioural issues. Almost every part of day-to-day life terrified him, and he reacted in the best way he’d learned how – ATTACK. It was as though he was fighting for his life day and night.
He didn’t understand affection, was terrified of touch – I couldn’t get his lead/harness on and off without being bitten – and he couldn’t make eye contact without becoming overly uncomfortable and aggressive.
He would resource guard any food nearby. He had a form of night terror where he would wake in the middle of the night very suddenly and attack whoever was closest to him.
Thankfully, I was the only person or animal on the receiving end.
These behaviours boiled down to one thing – he had absolutely NO TRUST in humans. He had been let down time and time again.
He was so misunderstood, so confused, so contradicted.
Navigating Trust, Patience… and Grooming
As time went on, Archie would begin to initiate play and affection. But he would quickly become uncomfortable and revert to his most practised behaviour – aggression. He wanted so much to love and be loved, but life had taught him that humans could not be trusted.
This is where I learned the importance of moving at a pace a dog is comfortable with. Building that trust, listening to a dog when they tell you they’re uncomfortable – NEVER punishing a growl.
As the months went on, I worked hard to identify his triggers and gain his trust. Rewarding him for desired behaviours (which was easy as he is a greedy little guy!).
Human interactions became enjoyable for him. But there was still a monumental hurdle we knew we had to jump – being a Shih Tzu, he would need professional grooming every 6-8 weeks.
Initially, he was terrified. He would attack the shower and the shampoo and wouldn’t tolerate any grooming of his body or a nail trim. Thankfully, he was always accepting of having his head/face trimmed. But it took months of patience, positive reinforcement and putting as much trust into him as he did me.
Archie’s Homecoming: From Foster Family
to Forever Family
As you can imagine – after all we had been through together, I couldn’t let him go. Rather than foster, I adopted Archie – to give him the loving home and stability he had always wanted and needed.
Now, eight years on, Archie is the light of my life.
This affectionate, sociable, and cheeky companion not only tolerates but enjoys grooming, thanks to trust, patience…. and, of course, treats.
He has not only transformed my life but equipped me with the skills needed to be the best groomer I can be; I am forever grateful for the lessons he taught me.
